I am one of those people who believes that fashion inspiration is not only coming from runways or top designers. Throughout the history, we have witnessed many cases that influence the fashion scene. Be it the hippie rebels of 60’s, anarchic punk rock movement of 70’s, disco fever of 80’s or even the everyday looks of the Royal Family. For those who seek inspiration, the history of our world is the biggest source. There have been so many influential artists, painters, musicians, filmmakers that shaped the way we look at the world. So, in order to understand where exactly certain trends come from, we sometimes need to take a journey to a certain era. This article aims to take you back to the 90’s, when it was all about the street culture taking over the world. If you are looking for style icons from past years, look no further. We gathered some of the best icons from 90’s fictional characters that we saw in the movies and TV shows. If you are ready, let’s make a throwback to the spirit of 90’s!
Margot Tenenbaum – The Royal Tenenbaums
Although this movie did not come out in the 90’s, the character Margot Tenenbaum who was brought to life by Gwyneth Paltrow was certainly a reflection of 90’s. The moody, melancholic character of Margot is portrayed with an iconic style throughout the movie which includes striped tennis dresses, a camel color fur coat, pink cashmere gloves (to hide her missing ring finger), all accompanied by her iconic Hermes Birkin bag. Always in accordance with the color story of the movie, Margot’s character proved that it’s not only about style, but how you reflect your style with attitude. Oh, and let’s not forget the hairpin that adorns her golden bob hair throughout the movie.
Mia Wallace – Pulp Fiction
It is almost impossible to forget the scene in which Mia is dancing to “Girl, You’ll Be a Woman Soon” with the simplest outfit possible; a white button-down shirt paired with black pants. Her dark bob with bangs and dark red lipstick makes her even more iconic. Violent but forever classic, Mia Wallace is one of our 90’s style heroes.
Cher Horowitz – Clueless
There are many style lessons we need to learn from Cher, the main character of Clueless, possibly the most stylish movie of the 90’s. Portraying a selection of “over-exaggerated” rich high school looks with her best friend Dionne, Cher is often spotted wearing mini dresses, matchy matchy plaid suits (always paired with knee-length socks), slip dresses and Mary Jane heels from top designers like Calvin Klein and Alaia. Here is a quote from Cher that you need to remember: “If Calvin Klein approves, you’re golden.”
Vivian – Pretty Woman
If we say that Vivian is possibly the best-dressed prostitute of all time, we don’t think anyone would disagree. In fact, the multiple different styles we saw on her are still either in our closets or current shopping lists! Some of her iconic looks includes over the knee boots, long gloves, a polka dot dress and a simple white button-down shirt with buttons undone, tied up on the front and sleeves folded on the elbow: perfect combo!
Mathilda – Leon the Professional
The 14-year character of Natalie Portman in the movie “Leon the Professional” is the ultimate style icon of every teenage girl. Being a perfect embodiment of 90’s trends, we see Mathilda wearing crochet cardigans, striped tees, high-waisted shorts combined with boots, bomber jacket and round sunglasses. Do we all remember the iconic scene where Leon and Mathilda are walking with a pot of plant in Mathilda’s hand? *tries to hold back tears*
Rachel Green – Friends
The most stylish “friend”, Rachel has been a style icon of 90’s since the very first episode where she walked into the coffee shop with her extravagant wedding dress. We saw Rachel sporting every single trend of 90’s from slip dresses over t-shirts, miniskirts paired with long striped socks, sleeveless button down vests, denim overalls and powerful double-breasted blazers. She has become such a phenomenon with the show that even her haircut started to be known as “the Rachel haircut”. Enough reasons to be an icon, right?
Carrie Bradshaw – Sex and the City
If there is one fictional character that taught us every single thing we need to know about fashion, that is Carrie Bradshaw. The iconic New Yorker’s style is all about breaking the rules; from mixing prints and patterns, to pairing tulle skirts with tees. The stylist of the show, Patricia Field was the behind the scenes star who created this timeless style icon that still continues to inspire many woman around the world. We should listen to every single fashion advice of a character who says: “I like my money where I can see it — hanging in my closet.”
