Music Festival Dreams: The Top 5 Trends We Predict to See This Festival Season

With summer fast approaching, not only does this mean hotter days and later nights, but it also means that the music lovers of the world may all rejoice in unison for one reason and one reason alone: festival season. As the lineups continue to be released and the tickets continue to be sold, these weekends full of concerts, carnival food, and tents will be here before we know it. As any festival-guru knows however, it is not just about who you see at these events, but it is also about who you wear. Fashion tends to take a close second to music during festival season, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.

In order to get our readers prepared and into the proper packing mind-set for these music-filled getaways, we have narrowed down the many SS17 trends that have been spotted on the runways. The following are the top five looks and styles that we expect to see on the crowds this summer, from Coachella to WayHome and everything in between.

Sheer Bliss

The past couple of season have graced us with the glorious presence of sheer. Whether it is incorporated into the skirt of a dress or the body of a blouse, it is definitely a trend that has proven itself to the fashion world. Looks involving sheer give the wearer a lot of room for creativity and personalization, which may be why we love it so much. While wearing next to nothing (or nothing at all) underneath can give off an edgy and daring look, done right, sheer can also be made to look delicate and elegant. It is for this reason that we feel this trend will be a big hit among festival attendees this year. Along with the endless possibilities that this look allows us to explore, it is also a very lightweight, and airy fiber, making this trend even more perfect for the hot festival crowds.

Multi-Coloured Vision

Of course, one of the number one things that any festival expert will tell you to pack are your best and most stylish sunnies. Sunglasses can without a doubt make or break any outfit. With the right choice, they can so simply and seamlessly take your look to the next level. This season, sunglasses must be anything but boring. Throw away your black lenses and say hello to a world full of colour. With more than a rainbow of options to choose from, there is surely a shade out there to match each one of your festival styles. These may look rad on the runways, but we feel that they will look even cooler throwing shade over the eyes of the many fashionable concert-goers this year.

Metallic Moods

With all of the music and all of the “feels”, for some, festival season becomes a time of self-reflection. However, for those who wish to do more living and less thinking, this next trend will do the reflecting for them. Seen on many of the SS17 runways, it seems that this overtly futuristic style is just begging to be worn through the fields of Indio. Festivals tend to bring out the more daring side of fashion lovers, and that is exactly why we think they are the perfect place to experiment with this bold new trend. Metallica may not be included in every lineup, but these metallics definitely will be.

Feminism. Politics. Peace.

With the current uproar that has been occurring involving various political and societal world events, individuals have begun to loudly voice their opinions and designers have not been an exception. If anything, designers have utilized the platform of their runway shows and have voiced their opinions the loudest. From Christian Dior to Prabal Gurung, this year’s NYFW was nothing less than controversial, and we expect to see this controversy carry over into the upcoming festival season.  FASHION Humber took a look at these political trends in more detail last month in our article Trend Report: Fashion Gets Political.  As Woodstock’s initial foundation was built upon the ideas of protests and peace, music festivals of today are not much different. They are a time and a place for attendees to express themselves in their truest forms. For this reason, we will without a doubt witness a sea of political stances and feminist activists this year, all with the help of the classic graphic-tee.

Un-Buttoned Professionals

Last year’s festival season saw its fashionistas trade in their flower crowns for chokers and off-the-shoulder tops. This year however, these off the shoulder tops are getting their own upgrade. Taking the classic business look and spinning it into something more fashionable and appropriate for life outside of the office, many designers have opted for more of an unbuttoned look. Taking the typical white collared shirt and pulling it down a few inches past where it usually sits, this trend is breathing new life and style into the once professionals-only outfit. Seeing as music festivals are places to let loose, what better time than festival season to let your work clothes live a little?

With festival season upon us, we hope to see our favoured SS17 trends, along with many others, amongst the fashion-forward crowds. We especially can’t wait to see what the celebs and their stylists have in store for us this year. Be sure to pack smart, because our eyes are on you!
