Fashion Humber Style Tips for a Student Budget
It seems that in today’s social media saturated society, it is next to impossible to go even an hour without coming across a picture of either a Kardashian or a Jenner. Whether we like it or not, they surely are here to stay. Not only has this famous family altered the television media, but they have also swayed the way in which fashion-lovers dress. Whether it is with an Instagram selfie or a paparazzi snapshot, both the Kardashian and the Jenner sisters continue to predict, create, and follow the latest and boldest current trends.
However, unless you have your own reality show or have happened to stumble upon a couple million dollars on your way to class, it can often be very difficult to follow in the glamorous footsteps of the KUWTK stars. As effortless as these stylish sisters tend to make it look, pretty ‘aint cheap! With this in mind, this isn’t to say that it is overall impossible to dress like an off-duty reality TV star. All it takes are the three P’s: Preparation, Patience, and Positivity.
As I have placed it first, Preparation may be the most important of the P’s. One cannot go shopping, either in-store or online, without at least an idea of the Kardashian they are wishing to get their inspiration from. Instagram accounts need to be studied, Snapchats need to be screenshotted, and Pinterest boards need to be created. For example, there is a big difference between shopping as a Kim and shopping as a Kourtney. If you’re shopping as Kim, you may find yourself in the trendy stores of Queen Street West, such as Zara and M Boutique; however, if you are preparing to shop as a Kourtney, you will probably want to plan your shopping day around more boho-chic stores like Free People and Anthropologie.
The second P
Patience is something that I’m sure every shopper with a budget has learned to harness. While attempting to achieve the polished look of a celebrity with the wallet of a student, the age old saying “if at first you don’t succeed, try and try again”, becomes all the more valid. If you’ve taken your inspiration form a specific outfit and wish to duplicate it, chances are, you will not be very lucky; instead, try being creative and put your own spin on it. The outfit then will become even better, simply because it has been altered to fit your own personal style. You most likely will not hit the Kardashian jackpot upon your first shopping endeavour, but with a lot of Patience and the third P, Positivity, your KUWTK wardrobe will eventually fall into place. And better yet, with the proper eye, it won’t even look like you were on a budget!
In order to get the ball rolling and to give you some initial inspiration, we have done a round-up of pieces from the Kardashian-Jenner fashion past which can be purchased for less by (what I am almost certain Scott Disick would call) “The Peasants” of the world.
Kendall is Mellow Yellow
When Kendall Jenner isn’t sporting her more casual, model off-duty look, she goes in the complete opposite direction, opting for pieces that allow her to take risks. Pictured here in yellow Kendall + Kylie “Paperbag Sweatpants”, Jenner is giving us all kinds of Spring vibes and we love it! However… we don’t necessarily love the price. Retailing at $295.00, these bright sweats do not generally scream “student budget”. Luckily, Zara had the same bright idea on a much more affordable dime. So, thanks to Zara, for just $35.90, we too can assist Kendall in announcing that Spring has officially sprung.
Kourtney in “Kamo”
With Kourtney’s style, it really seems to depend on the day. But she does keep one thing consistent: whatever vibe she is going for, she is all in. Whether it be a head-to-toe Woodstock inspired ensemble or a more edgy Yeezy feel (as she is pictured here), Kourtney’s style game is always strong. Though this look appears as if it has come straight off of Kanye’s Runway, Kourt got her camo duds from Faith Connexion for the substantial price of $1,140. Hey, if you got it, flaunt it – no judgement here. But as for the rest of us: if you don’t got it, flaunt your way over to M Boutique. M offers a very similar and less extravagantly priced camo jacket, retailing at $130.00, meaning we don’t all have to break the bank to feel like Pablo.
Don’t Mesh with Kylie
If you have been following the current fashion trends at all, then you know that mesh is everywhere; on the sleeves of dresses, on the back of t-shirts, and even under ripped boyfriend jeans. With this outfit, Kylie has decided to completely commit to this trend with a turtleneck made from mesh and nothing else. Not only was this look suitable for Kendal Jenner’s 21st birthday, it is also something that could be worn out on the town. Can we all afford this $345.00 Masion Margiela top? – no. But we are in luck; BCBG Maxazria offers a very similar piece to that of Kylie’s barely-there turtleneck that usually retails for $127.00, but is now on sale for just $25.00! So get it while you can and let this outfit be the kylight of your Saturday.
It’s Krystal Klear to Kim
What’s good Mrs. West
These days, Mrs. West has without a doubt been living up to her name, continuously stepping out in Yeezy and showing everyone else how it’s done. Here, Kim has opted for a pair of her husband’s ‘Lucite’ heels. These may be free of charge for her but, for those of us who are not married to the designer, retail at $815.00. Clear heels have been around for a few seasons now and it looks as if they are here to stay for Spring and Summer. This trend is especially great for creating a very flattering illusion of elongating your legs; however, since we are all not Kim Kardashian West, Public Desire has come to the rescue! Not only do they offer a nude style that is similar to Kim’s for the price of $44.99, but they also carry versions with different shades of soles to suit your own personal style. Clearly, we need all 7 colours!
Khloe Fur President
The sleepwear during the day trend is something that I am sure a lot of people can get behind, especially Khloe. Whether she is sporting a long silk robe for dinner at The Nice Guys or walking through LAX in shoes resembling slippers, as shown here, the “Strong Looks Better Naked” author always does this look right. But don’t be fooled, these are not your grandma’s slippers. Coming in at $595.00, Khloe’s Givenchy slides are made for anything but sleep. If you are not willing to spend this much on a pair of outdoor slippers (we don’t blame you), your next and final stop is Aldo. They offer a very similar pair for the more student -leveled price of $35.00. They may not be made of mink fur, but these ‘Marrese – U’ slides will surely do the trick.
Moral of the Story
Hopefully this roundup has left you feeling inspired. The moral of the story? – just because you aren’t a reality TV star doesn’t mean you can’t dress like one. There really is no need to break the bank in order to follow in Kim’s Yeezy footsteps or Khloe’s Givenchy ones. Scott may not approve of these “peasant” prices, but I am sure the broke student in all of us will. So the next time you attempt to cop Kylie’s edgy style or Kendal’s more casual vibes, utilize the three P’s and have fun with it. Be creative, be daring, but most importantly, be you. Happy shopping dolls!
