Chanel FW19: Saying Goodbye to Karl Lagerfeld

Last week, the Grand Palais was once again transformed into a utopian fashion world, this time in the form of an alpine ski village. Karl Lagerfeld’s collection for Chanel debuted on March 5, 2019, one last time.

The show began with a moment of silence to honor the late creative genius followed by a voiceover of Karl in an interview for the Chanel podcast. It was a heartfelt celebration of life and the four decades he spent working at the fashion house.

Cara Delavigne – Karl’s long-time muse – opened the show, stepping out of the ‘Chalet Gardenia’ in a hounds-tooth long coat layered over a checked tweed flowy pant-suit. Along with Cara, there were several other Lagerfeld muses that included Kaia Gerber as well as Penelope Cruz, who closed the show.

The models strutted through the snow-covered set, hands in pockets and chins up high, making sure Lagerfeld’s final show was as memorable as he was. The collection evoked femininity, strength and class with, of course, a modern twist à la Karl. There were long checked coats, pant suits, wide-legged trousers in neutrals and some in pops of colour such as bold pinks, reds and blues.

Karl’s last collection is arguably one of his best. It embodied and projected his creativity and vision that molded the house of Chanel for the last 40 years, and payed homage to the silhouettes and powerful themes of femininity that Coco Chanel used to start her brand. Karl Lagerfeld’s legacy will, without a doubt, live on forever in the fashion world.
