Fashion Humber Alumni Spotlight: Moira Heaney

Blogger, Detox Market Toronto Fashion Humber, Alumni, Moira Kelly, Brand Ambassador

Ever wonder what your fellow Humber Fashion students are up to after they graduate? In this series we’ll get to know a few Fashion Management and Promotions alumni, and learn more about how their time at Humber kick started their career!

Our first alum is Moira Heaney, who graduated in 2016. She currently works as a Detox Market Ambassador at The Detox Market, a retailer that has been pioneering the green beauty industry since 2010. Some of her responsibilities in this role include assisting with marketing events, connecting with current brands, researching new brands and working on the online store by updating digital information.

FASHION HUMBER: Why did you choose to study Fashion Management and Promotions at Humber?

Moira Heaney: After taking an undergrad that really didn’t spark my interest, I knew that Fashion Management and Promotions, with courses such as Product Development, Marketing and Buying were what I had been craving. Fashion has always played a huge part in my life and I knew I wanted to start a career in the industry – this program fit those needs perfectly.

FH: How did your time in this program help to prepare you for your career?

MH: It’s funny how whenever you are staying up late to study, the same question always pops up: “When will I ever use this?”. Safe to say, the information is very useful! I have gone back to my media kit many times from my Marketing project and have been so thankful for knowing how to navigate google analytics. I definitely feel a lot of confidence in the workplace with everything I learned in the program.

FH: What was your most memorable experience as a Fashion Management and Promotions student?

MH: My most memorable experiences would have to be the connections and networking that was provided in the program. With all the networking events we were exposed to, I got to meet so many people in the industry. As well as the friends I made, it was awesome to be surrounded by people with the same passion and love for the industry.

FH: Any advice to current fashion students who are about to enter the workforce?

MH: I would say to really take advantage of all the program has to offer, including knowledge from your teachers. They have great real life work experience and stories that give you a peek into what’s in store, as well as some insight into the industry. Most of all, make the most of it – those 8 months fly by!
