When people find out I’m doing a fashion course, they automatically assume I intend to be a fashion designer. When I was younger, I used to draw the same conclusion: fashion industry = fashion design. Even as a kid, I never wanted to make clothing; I just liked being around clothing. It took me a while to discover that it was possible to translate my love of fashion into a career that didn’t involve designing clothes.
6:30 am – Waking up at 6:30 a.m., trying to get ready in a fashionable manner including the 20-minute makeup routine, rushing out the door. Stopping by at Tim’s for my regular coffee and bagel for breakfast. And walk to the college- just a 10-minute walk! Lucky huh?
8:00 am– Finally you end up in your classroom fashionably late as usual. Ready to pop open your books and get right down to business. Through this course we’re offered a wide variety of courses, including marketing, wholesale, visual merchandising, trend analysis, entrepreneurship and retail buying. Today it’s the retail buying lecture which covers all activities necessary to buy and sell merchandise at a profit.
10:45am– The class ends and you are a free bird. This is the time I get to complete my homework and online quizzes that are due and also to enjoy the events taking place on campus. Trust me there’s always something thanks to Ignite!
12:45 pm– Heading back home
12:55– Reach home. Start cooking some tasty lunch. Because food is life!!!
2:00 pm– Finished cooking and eating. Time to get ready again and go to work.
2:30 pm-Go to the bus stop and wait for your bus. It’s just a 12-minute bus ride to the mall.
3:00 pm– Start my job as a part time sales associate at a retail store in Sherway Gardens. I like the job because you are able to meet new people every day.
6:00pm– A small break= time to run to Starbucks!
9:30 pm– Close the store and then head home.
10:00pm – Finally I am Home!!
10:30 pm– Eat dinner
11:00 pm– Go to bed.
This Fashion Program is definitely hard work, time-consuming, and exhausting – a clear indication of what my career will be like. For anyone who’s considering a career in this field, I’d like to offer two pieces of advice. The first one being to make sure you are very serious about fashion. It is a tough industry that often requires a backbone. Once you’ve decided it’s something you really want, my second piece of advice would be to jump in with both feet and work hard for it!
