COACHELLA: HITS AND MISSES

 

It’s that time of year again – Coachella season. Every year leading up to this iconic festival, I always express how overrated the ‘festival’ scene is; it’s basically an excuse to dawn your best 60’s chic with pounds of glitter. That being said, I would have sold my left arm to have been able to see BEY’s performance, and let’s face it I probably would been rocking flower crown, denim cut-offs and a fringe top.

For all us who did not have the privilege of seeing the Destiny Child reunion (heart breaking), let’s breakdown Coachella 2018’s fashion. Although it seems that within the perimeters of the festival there are no misses, from outside we can judge and say, “oh no you didn’t!”

Before I begin I have one question; why does everyone feel the need to put a wig on for Coachella?  If you ask me, it does not seem like an appropriate event to wear a wig. First, – it’s hot, and I can only imagine how sweaty it is up in there. Also, it doesn’t seem like there are a lot of mirrors located in the festival arena – therefore you have to rely on your friend to tell you it looks good. You know your friend is likely going to be shady and say yes, when really it looks like a hot mess because they don’t want to deal with it. I understand why the Kylie Jenner’s of the world wear wigs to Coachella, because they have professional stylists. Also, they aren’t with us peasants, they are chilling in the VIP area that are fully equipped with air conditioning machines to ensure celebrities don’t sweat off the makeup that took five hours to apply.

 

Now, let’s look at the top seven looks:

1. A surprising person that is on my best dressed list is Justin Bieber. I have to admit, I kind of love the matching shirt and short combine, especially with nothing underneath. Normally, this whole homeless vibe would make JBiebs automatically end up on my worst dressed list but he actually fits in with the Coachella scene and is rocking it.

 

2. Rihanna is the queen of fashion (in my opinion), she does what she wants and she owns it. The mix of the 60’s beauty with the overtly westernized outfit is amazing. This outfit is made for the desert. Obviously not the real desert, the ‘Hollywood’ desert.

 

3. Slick woods is sick – this monocratic outfit is amazing and she makes it so effortlessly cool when in reality less than 1% of population could pull this off. I was obsessed as soon as I saw this outfit and immediately added her on Instagram.

 

4. You can’t have a best dressed list without a Hadid making the list. Bella knocked it out of the park with this look. This outfit makes me feel nostalgic for the 90’s. Even though this outfit is quite simple, she has a way of making it look so cool.

 

5. Also, someone who I never thought would be on my best dressed list is Amber Rose, but this outfit looks incredible on her. Simple and chic. This is one of the best looks I have ever seen her in…maybe because she is actually wearing clothes.

 

6. Next, is makeup guru James Charles. He is giving us the Jolie leg in all the right ways. I thought I was over this pose but he is bringing it back to life. First of all, he looks stunning and second, this is such a cool take on the motorcycle look.  

 

7. Lastly, Rihanna in the Gucci Mask. I . HAVE . NO . WORDS.

To be honest I had to refrain from making this entire list all Rihanna.

 

Now moving on to the worst dressed:

1. First, Tenya Taylor. It looks like she got dressed in the dark with the sock and shoes combo. Even though her running shoes are Louis Vuitton – they are still awful.

 

2. Normally I would approve of this look but Coachella is supposed to be a place where you get dressed up – it’s a fantasy, and honestly this is just boring. Shay Mitchell looks like she is wearing an everyday outfit. I see girls wearing this same look out in Toronto.

 

3. Cardi B (performance outfit), go back to Fashion Nova where you know the clothes are going to fit. There are so many different elements to this look that it just looks like a hot mess.

 

4. Camila Mendes, this is your time to shine girl! You are a new celebrity. You should be making us all want to be you by wearing the hottest designer looks – not making us want throw you in the pool behind you. This looks like her stylist was just lazy and gave her one of her younger sister’s dresses that she made in Home Ec class.

 

5. Nicole Richie, queen of BOHO – what is this? Nicole is someone we can always expect great style from. Yet this does not fit the Coachella vibe. She isn’t fake like the rest of the celebrities – she truly is a bohemian goddess so this is just straight out of left field.

 

6. Nick Vail – no wonder Vanessa left you.

 

7. Hailey Balwin. LAZY. Hailey are you really that big of a fan? REALLY?

I was little disappointed with this year’s fashion. The only standout was obviously RIRI in that Gucci mask. Other than that, I wasn’t all that impressed. It seems like there was a lack of effort this year. Normally Kendall Jenner would have been in my top outfits, but everything she wore seemed to lack luster and didn’t meet my standards of excellence (not even to make the worst dressed list). Were their stylists busy? Did they actually have to plan an outfit on their own? Or is it because there is only so much glitter and sheer dresses a girl can take before she says NO MORE?
